Architectural Watercolour

This is a beginner’s/intermediate’s opportunity to learn how to draw and paint buildings in watercolour. During the week, demonstrations will be given by the tutor in the different skills and techniques of drawing and painting in watercolour and will also help guide students individually through the exercises. The course is based on buildings using photographs supplied by the tutor and also includes sketching on site in the grounds of the college.By the end of the week students will be able to produce watercolour paintings using the skills and techniques learnt during the course.Materials will be provided but you are welcome to bring your own if you wish.

This course provides the opportunity to learn how to draw and paint buildings in watercolour. Topics covered include basic techniques in drawing including perspective, sketching, painting, and colour mixing.

Also included in the course, we will be working from photographs and sketching with line and wash techniques.

Subjects will include different types and styles of architecture, perspective and some basic landscape techniques using photographs supplied by the tutor. There may also be an opportunity to sketch in the grounds of the college, weather permitting.

Each session will include demonstrations by tutor who will also help guide the students individually through the exercises.

By the end of the course the students will be able to produce watercolour landscapes using the skills and techniques learnt during the course.

All tools and materials will be supplied by the Summer School. This course is aimed at beginners and students with some experience so if you have some of your own tools and materials then you are welcome to bring them with you.

Architectural Watercolour uses photographic reference material supplied by the tutor. There will also be an opportunity to sketch in the grounds of the college, weather permitting. Sketching stools are provided by the college.

Tutor: Jonathan Newey

Jonathan Newey is an award winning artist who comes from a long line of artists in his family. He has extensive experience in a wide range of mediums including watercolour, acrylic and coloured pencils and has exhibited in many exhibitions and galleries including The Mall Galleries, London, Society of Birmingham Artists and West of England Academy.
