20th Century and Contemporary Collage
Many artists from the 20th and 21st century have used collage as a medium to explore their ideas in a fast changing world. We will look at how they have transformed readily available printed material and paper scraps into beautiful abstract compositions, extraordinary imaginary worlds, and weird and wonderful hybrid creations. We'll use a variety of found and collected materials to make our own collages trying out techniques developed in the 1920s through to the present day. Bring along your old magazines, photographs, catalogues and calendars and be prepared for some surprising results!
This course aims to give you an introduction to collage; a way of working that became common place in the 20th century and is still being explored and developed by artists today. You will be shown many different ways in which artists have worked with scraps of paper collected from a variety of sources to create extraordinary visual effects and meaningful art works.
You will be able to try out many collage techniques. The course will be a combination of informal talks and discussions, tutor lead making and time to develop your own ideas with guidance.
