An Introduction to Nordic Walking
Nordic Walking is fun for any age and fitness level, providing you can walk short distances. Once you have learned the technique, using the special poles provided during the course, muscles can be retrained, a greater feeling of stability will be experienced, and a general feeling of wellbeing will be felt, due to the aerobic exercise. Your core muscles too, will tighten and tone, helping to reduce the appearance of weight on waist and stomach. Used on a regular basis, you can burn 20% more calories than normal walking. Depending on your own level of fitness, you can use Nordic Walking to gain a good body workout. Or, simply use it as a tool to walk with friends, taking stress from your hip and knee joints, with the poles gently propelling you forward, thus taking less effort, and enabling you to walk that bit further. Give it a try, it's great fun, and enjoy the outdoors in lovely surroundings. Advice will be given on poles and clothing, so that you can join a club near your home, on returning from Marlborough.
This course is designed for the complete beginner. Poles are supplied during the course, and you will learn how to handle and use them correctly, thus enabling you to gain the very best health benefits from Nordic Walking.
Throughout the week, we will build up our technique and knowledge, so that you can go home ready to find other Nordic Walkers in your area. Each student will be encouraged to use the poles correctly for their own body, shape, size and fitness. They will also learn how to gain the very best benefits Nordic walking has to offer. This will vary from student to student, depending on age and fitness. There is no competition in Nordic Walking, it is personal to you, and you will quickly learn how your body responds to the use of the poles.
Each day we will do fun exercises, tarmac and grass walks, all close to the college, hill practice and much more. You will be expected to walk at a reasonable pace, working up to about 4 miles at the end of the week.
Although Nordic walking is for everyone, it is preferable you are able to walk a few miles at a decent pace, so that the enjoyment of the group remains together.
You will need to bring a small rucksack, waterproof coat that can fit in the sack when not needed, layers of light clothing rather than large coats, lightweight walking boots or sturdy trainers, water, slim fitting gloves, hats and waterproof trousers if weather is bad.
When we do Nordic walking we are not able to tie clothing around our waists as it interferes with the poles, hence coats etc to go in a rucksack.
Nordic Walking is hugely beneficial to health and fitness, and Maggie makes the classes and walks fun rather than arduous! She teaches at various holiday centres and colleges across the country, works with her local county councils for classes locally in her home county of Suffolk, and also takes private students for holidays or day classes. Maggie trained to be an instructor with Nordic walking UK a few years ago, and has been so impressed by its benefits that she has worked tirelessly to promote it wherever she can.
