Sculpture Workshop for Beginners

This is a course for those who love the idea of making sculpture, who would benefit from an inspiring and supportive atmosphere in which to develop their ideas. In the first part of the week, I aim to introduce you to materials, such as clay and plaster, and to techniques including modelling, casting and direct plaster. The focus of the second part of the week will be on helping you to develop an idea in three dimensions and to bring it to fruition. Throughout the week the emphasis of the course will be on helping you to resolve challenges and extend your skills and understanding.

If you love the idea of making sculpture and have an open mind, this is the course for you. No previous experience is necessary. In the first part of the week I will introduce you to some methods and materials including developing ideas using different sorts of clay, making a simple ‘waste' mould, mixing and using plaster and techniques of using plaster directly. I will show you how to make simple armatures (supports) for your work. In the latter part of the week you be helped to develop your own ideas, particularly to overcome the problems that may well occur in the course of developing and completing your piece.

Requirements

All materials and tools will be provided, but you may bring your own if you wish.

For safety reasons, we ask you to wear sensible shoes (not sandals please).

Old clothes are best-for obvious reasons.
