Wire and Paper Modelling
This course introduces students to a completely novel method of modelling in wire and softened paper. Invented by the tutor, who was for many years an illustrator, the method is sensitive and flexible and has a track record of success. Students are not required to be particularly talented, just very interested. Portrait busts, animals, birds, small figures, caricature and puppets are examples of what can be achieved. Peter Rush has a book on the subject ‘Rush on Paper’.
This course has run for several years using a method of modelling chicken wire and softened kitchen roll applied like clay to the surface and this has proved a strong and surprisingly sensitive medium. The paper used in this way, naturally mimics muscle, bone, skin, hair, fur, feathers, scales and claws.
The models are usually portrait heads and hands, animals, birds etc and also puppets, large and small. It doesn’t require any great artistic talent, just a real interest in how things are your tactile memory does most of the work. It lends itself particularly to theatre and caricature.
Peter Rush has a travelling exhibition, ‘Rush on Them’ and a book ‘Rush on Paper’.
Just bring with you, long nosed pliers and good practical reference.
I look forward to meeting you at Summer School.
