China Painting
Endless pleasure can be had, and given by painting on white glazed china using wonderful paints which can then be ‘fired’ in your normal oven to make them dishwasher proof! They are not suitable for Meissen type designs but ideal for anything bolder from Clarice Cliff to Mediterranean pottery. After a little practice and learning how to use a ‘banding wheel’ for lines round the edges, we will undertake several pieces or a panel of tiles for kitchen or bathroom. Do bring any white china from home extra pieces can be acquired at cost during the course.
At the beginning of the week, I will show you lots of examples of what can be achieved with these wonderful, oven-fireable paints, and then I will demonstrate some of the ways of achieving the different effects.
You will then have fun experimenting on plain white tiles before starting on a project in earnest.
You will then be introduced to a ‘banding wheel’, on which we centre an item, spin the wheel and produce a perfect line round the rim it can also be used to create beautiful, multi-coloured spirals. The paint pots come in a big selection of colours, all of which can be mixed with each other, along with tubes of ‘outliner’, with very small nozzles, brilliant for dots, and these are even felt tipped pens! They all dry fairly quickly within an hour or so and it is quite safe to take the projects home at the end of the week, to fire them in your own oven for 35 minutes, after which they are dishwasher proof! Before firing, the paint can be removed if anything goes wrong, so it is very forgiving!
I shall bring lots of white glazed china with me for you to choose from (at cost), but if you find any item you would like to paint, do please bring it with you.
The paints, brushes, wheels, etc are all supplied and 3 items of china are included in the price of the course.
