On Location In Marlborough

This course is designed to develop photographic skills via series of illustrated lectures, group seminars and practical tasks. Work will be reviewed daily in group seminars to ensure individual progress.  Anyone is welcome, and novice photographers will be given one-to-one tuition as time allows within the group. The core location will be the fascinating, beautiful and extensive grounds of Marlborough College. However, students will explore the town and nearby environs with their cameras and tutor, whilst others, according to their ability and inclination, will be encouraged to undertake expeditions in the locality on their own after being briefed on specific locations outside the College. Digital or film cameras are suitable. However, film and processing costs of the latter will have to be born by individual participants. There are several facilities for this a short walk from the college in Marlborough High Street. Naturally, there will be some delay in seeing the results, but past experience shows that a group of mixed digital and film users can be mutually beneficial. Digital camera users are encouraged to bring their own downloading devices, USB memory sticks, and or laptops on order to be able to review their work and progress. Seminars will consist of showing and discussing our photographs via digital projector so that individual approaches can be assessed within the group, and the learning experience shared.

To foster ability to tackle a wide variety of photographic tasks.

Course Objectives

To acquire the knowledge and confidence to take better pictures when travelling or in any chosen environment.

Course Structure

Via a series of illustrated lectures, participants will be introduced to the fundamentals of how cameras and lenses work and how to compose memorable photographs. This will allow us to examine the work of masters and learn how to apply their methods in our photographs.

Each lecture is designed to be a practical introduction to key aspects of location photography, which we will then explore with our cameras.

Topics will include nature, topography, character portraits, architecture, significant details, gardens, sports, events, atmospheric effects, and "spirit of place”.

We will have access to mini buses for field trips and detailed information about where to find inspirational and historic landscapes will be given. Students will be encouraged to explore these as special projects and we shall meet to view and discuss the results in group seminars.
