Kiln Formed Glass
In this class you will learn the fundamentals of glass fusing and techniques. We shall discuss design ideas to create your first piece. You will learn how to cut the glass, and to apply colours and other mediums to the glass prior to fusing. There will be a talk on glass compatibility and we'll discuss about the different firing programs for the kiln. During the course you will make several pieces, these will range from coasters, encapsulating different materials between the layers, a decorative panel or frame using the ‘Bullseye' range of coloured glass, confetti, and stringers and coloured frits to produce your project or slump into a plate, or make a wall hanger. We shall also try the NEW microwave kiln technique for jewellery.
This course is aimed at those with little or no previous experience in kiln-formed glass.
An introductory course, which covers the technique of cutting glass, fusing and encapsulating materials, and observing how, they behave during the firing cycle.
We shall cover a number of techniques, starting with fusing different things, layered between 2 x pieces of glass. Bring along anything you would like to try e.g. leaves, metal and found objects.
You will create several tiles and jewellery pieces that demonstrate full fusing and tack fusing.
The course also covers fusing coloured glass together and then firing the glass again to slumping the glass into a form, such as a plate.
If you could collect images of designs you like, in magazines, books, sketch books, photo's of your favourite painter etc, so that you can translate the image to your panel or plate.
Also, looking on the internet, Google Image ‘kiln-formed glass' and it will bring up some interesting pictures.
The glass we shall be using is Bullseye glass 90 co, which is supplied on the course but if there is something special you wish to buy, look at www.warmglass.com.
During the course you shall be able to make jewellery using the new microwave kiln with some Dichroic glass.
I look forward to meeting you all at Summer School.
