Traditional Intaglio Etching
The technique of etching metal with various reactive chemicals to create incised designs and patterns was first used by jewellers and armours. Artists appropriated these techniques probably around the late 1500s. Rembrandt is credited for much of its artistic development and a great deal of modern intaglio is based on his legacy. This course will take you through creating an etching on zinc plate, through to proofing and printing a finished print. Using traditional acid bath methods you will learn how to apply and draw into different types of ‘Grounds’ to create your image. You should bring visual material with you in the form of drawings and photographs to help you create a composition for your print. The week long course will enable you to explore some of the many approaches and techniques that etching offers the artist.
