Watercolours: Light on Sky, Sea and Land

A course for less experienced painters that explores how basic  skills lead to more advanced approaches and compelling work, particularly where the effects of light bestow their magical sparkle.  We will explore the seven priorities for successful work namely, atmosphere and mood, viewpoint, composition, tone, and colour, together with two others concerning paint handling and brushwork. Like the seven samurai we will gather them together.  There will be demonstrations for all, one to one tuition, reference pictures to work from, and all demonstrations will be given to guests also part of a day spent painting outdoors. Original paintings will be on show together with photographs which show in close up how, stage by stage, the paintings were done.  Many other reference drawings, paintings and sketches will be on show together with explanatory notes.  A mid week review of our work will highlight its positive aspects and my painting notes will reinforce this and your future efforts.  Advice on the best choice of materials, and samples to try out will be offered, and examples of my own work on display to critique, hoping that guests will also bring their own. Most essential materials will be provided. For your interest, this course leads on to more detailed aspects of watercolours which are dealt with in the next course, Focus on Watercolours.  Please contact Roger in advance via the Summer School office for any advice.

The English Garden in Watercolour

This inspiring new course will embrace many of the painterly aspects that represent a typical English garden.  A closer look at popular plants and flowers in season will be made in the studio, working from life, to achieve individual portraits and group studies. How to paint the perennial favourites such as lilies, roses, foxgloves, honeysuckle and delphiniums etc, these, amongst others, will all be inspiration for our paintings.  These will be executed in watercolour, the perfect medium for flowers, yet supported by a variety of exciting complementary mediums and new creative techniques.  Smaller areas of the garden will feature such as pots, pergolas and window boxes and weather permitting we will venture forth to paint the outdoor garden in situ, with its challenge of flowers and foliage, beds and borders.  This course is suitable for all levels of ability from absolute beginners to the more experienced. Tutor demonstrations, samples, reviews and supportive appraisals will underpin the progress of work. With help and guidance you will be able to discover your own personal style, while capturing in paint the English garden at its most glorious!

Make your Colour Sing

Watercolour is often mistaken for being difficult. What is a stain? Which pigments are transparent? Which colour is warm, which are cool? How do complimentaries work?

These questions are often asked by beginners who have been drawn into the mysterious nature of painting in watercolour. There is so much to discover, so much to explore. Susanna Bailey offers insight into the way to use both colour and compositional colour to make your painting come to life. By demonstrating and introducing workshops we will look at pure pigments, the mixing of delicious greys, the trouble with green, black magic, glowing whites, simple harmonies in complimentary colour, all encompassed within beautiful composition. When you leave the summer school you will take with you a treasure trove of information that will serve you for the rest of your creative life. A small portfolio, lovely paper, and a palette of all the pigments that we use to work with are provided by the Art College. Please bring your own materials as it is always interesting to share in the knowledge of watercolour. Stimulating photographs of the Wiltshire countryside, your own sketch books, and a simple still life will provide the backdrop for your colours to open up and sing!

Focus on Watercolours

This course explores in detail some aspects of watercolour painting and reveals the reasons for and the potential of using the best materials to produce the best of paintings, especially when aimed at particular subjects and themes.  If painting is a ‘language’, then your brush strokes are the ‘words’ of its ‘vocabulary’. The dexterity or ‘fluency’ with which you use them becomes your own style or way of ‘speaking’, your signature.

Whether you are relatively new to watercolours or more experienced, this course will develop your skills of observation, and complement these with a sensitive handling of brush and paint.  We will reinforce your understanding of a challenging medium and give you a foundation and springboard for making attractive paintings that will not only please you but which you’ll be proud to show to anyone.

For your interest this course develops in more detail some aspects of the previous course, Light on Sky, Sea, and Land.
