20th Century and Contemporary Collage

Many artists from the 20th and 21st century have used collage as a medium to explore their ideas in a fast changing world. We will look at how they have transformed readily available printed material and paper scraps into beautiful abstract compositions, extraordinary imaginary worlds, and weird and wonderful hybrid creations. We'll use a variety of found and collected materials to make our own collages trying out techniques developed in the 1920s through to the present day. Bring along your old magazines, photographs, catalogues and calendars and be prepared for some surprising results!

Silk Painting

Silk Painting is a rewarding medium to work with. It allows people of all ages and abilities to take part, and produces creative results in a very short time. This full day course will give you a more thorough understanding of silk painting. Steam-fix dyes and spirit-based gutta (resist line) will be used. The course begins with a demonstration and explanation of the technique. The first main objective is to get familiar with the application of the gutta resist gum - this forms a barrier to the liquid dyes. We cover all aspects of painting on the silk and how the silk reacts to the dyes. Simple dilution of the dyes is one of the methods used to obtain different effects. Salt and alcohol are used to give the colour rhythm and liveliness. Each student will be given a small piece of silk to experiment with before developing a design. Wall hangings, cushions, scarves and sarongs can be achieved on this course – plus much more!!

Drawing: Analytical and Synthetic

This course approaches drawing very much as both Picasso and Braque did during the cubist era. Typically, subject matter will revolve mainly around the still-life set-up.  Composition will be a vital ingredient tackled in a variety of ways: multiple viewpoints, unusual eye levels, breaking up shapes, and re-assembling.  Looking at artists of the 20th century will provide, and aid, a brief to each working day. Drawing media used will range from pencil, wet and dry media, charcoal through to collage. Surfaces worked on will be an exciting part of the equation. Come and express your drawing in many versatile and untested ways.

Wire and Paper Modelling

This course introduces students to a completely novel method of modelling in wire and softened paper. Invented by the tutor, who was for many years an illustrator, the method is sensitive and flexible and has a track record of success.  Students are not required to be particularly talented, just very interested.  Portrait busts, animals, birds, small figures, caricature and puppets are examples of what can be achieved. Peter Rush has a book on the subject ‘Rush on Paper’.

China Painting

Endless pleasure can be had, and given by painting on white glazed china using wonderful paints which can then be ‘fired’ in your normal oven to make them dishwasher proof! They are not suitable for Meissen type designs but ideal for anything bolder from Clarice Cliff to Mediterranean pottery.  After a little practice and learning how to use a ‘banding wheel’ for lines round the edges, we will undertake several pieces or a panel of tiles for kitchen or bathroom.  Do bring any white china from home extra pieces can be acquired at cost during the course.

Decoupage

For both the beginner and those with experience, this charming 18th–19th Century pastime involves sticking paper cut-outs to a surface in a design, and varnishing them to give the impression of inlay.  During the week we will each undertake 2 or 3 different projects, choosing from a selection of tablemats, trays, boxes and planters, all available for purchase at cost.  All other materials needed, including a wide choice of paper designs, glue, varnish etc. will be provided. Also suitable for young people 13-16 years old.
