Kiln Formed Glass - Intermediates
This course is for students who have some previous experience in kiln-formed glass or having worked with stained glass. There will be a talk on glass compatibility and we'll discuss about the different firing programs for the kiln, and we shall also observe how the glass behaves during the firing cycle. You shall be fusing and then slumping glass into a mould to make a plate, kiln-carving using fibre paper and blanket to make a panel. Try the "pate de verre” technique. You shall also drape fused glass over a mould to make a vase. Make a decorative panel or frame using the ‘Bullseye' range of coloured glass, confetti, and stringers and coloured frits to produce your project or make a wall hanger. We shall also try the NEW microwave kiln technique for jewellery.

Creations in Clay
Clay is a wonderful, mouldable material whose versatility allows it to be formed into a million different shapes using many processes, including the fun and fascination of the wheel. This course will introduce beginners to some of these basic techniques and give them the opportunity to make clay pieces such as vessels and sculptural forms, which may be either functional or purely artistic. Included in the course will be an introductory slide show, handouts on each skill and a basic design session. This course is aimed at those with little or no previous experience.

Silver Clay Jewellery
Design and make your own unique pieces of jewellery using this exciting and versatile material. Unfired silver clay looks and feels just like porcelain clay. It consists of very fine particles of silver mixed with a non-toxic binder. During firing the binder burns away, leaving fine silver that can be hallmarked. In this course you will look at jewellery design and learn the basic techniques of handling the silver clay, how to shape and form it, create textures and make hollow pieces. We will explore adding colour using glass enamel and also explore stone setting. You will learn how to make moulds and how to use these to create your own individual pieces. By the end of the course, you will have designed and created at least five pieces of real silver jewellery.
All materials and tools, as well as white cubic zirconium cut gems and a selection of semi precious cabochon stones, will be supplied.
This course is suitable for complete beginners, no previous experience needed.

Monotype/Monoprint
During the course we will look at the methods and mediums of monoprinting and monotype printing. You will have the opportunity to develop prints taken from your own sketches and explore processes used by artists since the 17th century including Rembrandt, Degas, Matisse, Picasso and more recently Emin. The Monotype / Monoprint is an intriguing hybrid among printmaking techniques. It is neither a print nor a painting but a unique combination of both. It can be achieved by using oil paint, water based paint or printers ink, through a press or by hand burnishing. The characteristic of both processes is that no two prints are the same.

Traditional Intaglio Etching
The technique of etching metal with various reactive chemicals to create incised designs and patterns was first used by jewellers and armours. Artists appropriated these techniques probably around the late 1500s. Rembrandt is credited for much of its artistic development and a great deal of modern intaglio is based on his legacy. This course will take you through creating an etching on zinc plate, through to proofing and printing a finished print. Using traditional acid bath methods you will learn how to apply and draw into different types of ‘Grounds’ to create your image. You should bring visual material with you in the form of drawings and photographs to help you create a composition for your print.
