Silver Jewellery

In this course you will be introduced to basic techniques needed to make jewellery in metal. All processes will be explained and demonstrated before you use the equipment and there will be relevant safety instructions given at the start of the week. From a bangle of twisted copper wire you will go on to make a silver ring with a decorative surface and then a range of projects that will engage you in development of a personal approach to design. The course builds upon the cumulative growth of knowledge based on repetition of certain processes e.g. soldering - but the emphasis is always on your own interpretations. This builds confidence!!

Learn the Art of traditional Chinese calligraphy from pictographic characters to abstractive characters. Explore the beauty of Chinese calligraphy by using a Chinese brush to make oriental adornment. No prior knowledge is necessary, you should simply be keen to learn and willing to hold a brush.

This class will introduce the common techniques related to the Chinese soft brushes and ink. Students will have the option to select from a range of subjects as demonstrated by the teacher including Lotus flower, Orchid, Bamboo and Landscape painting. Everyone who joins this workshop will have a chance to produce their piece of artwork in a Chinese way.

Calligraphy for Beginners and Improvers

Enjoy the pleasure of learning to dance with a pen, to create beautiful writing that expresses feelings and speaks to the eye of meaning. This course is for complete beginners to start with the basics and progress through using colour and design to produce useful and decorative projects. It is also for those with some experience to choose which script they wish to refine and develop their own version, together with associated techniques such as gilding, embossing, making small books as gifts, trying out a range of backgrounds or perhaps using lettering on fabric or terracotta pots. Josie is a Calligraphy & Lettering Arts Society accredited tutor and has taught adults country-wide for over 20 years. She is an enthusiastic, energetic and sensitive tutor who takes an individual approach in enabling people to reach their goals.

We will spend the week designing for the market of Greetings Cards. Using your preferred medium we can work on images suitable for the production of cards. I will supply Silk Painting materials but please bring your choice of medium with you, whether it be oils, crayons, pastels, inks and favourite brushes etc. Many of my silk paintings have been reproduced for Greetings Cards, Book Covers, Gift Wraps and Posters. Bring your own special equipment such as brushes and any artwork or paintings that can be used for inspiration. With the wide selection of books and references we can create a portfolio of work.

If you love to stitch and would like to create special greetings cards for your family and friends, then this is the course for you. You will have the opportunity to create original cards suitable for red-letter days and seasonal celebrations. The techniques used will be varied and will explore the use of colour and a wide range of materials. All the cards will incorporate some stitching, either by hand or machine. The work is easy but does require some manual dexterity. This course is suitable for all levels, from the complete beginner to the more experienced stitcher.
