Case Studies in Classical Music

It is one thing to like or dislike a piece of music, another to explain why one does. This course is designed for enthusiastic music listeners who would like to delve under the surface and unravel some of the mysteries of the great masterworks.

In a general introduction the ingredients of music and some of the ways to listen to it effectively will be explored.

In subsequent sessions four pieces of music from the various periods (Baroque/Classical/Romantic/Modern) will be studied in some detail each day. There will be discussion involving Music Theory up to a point but the emphasis will be on informed listening to good recordings and shared enthusiasm for the various musical works.
